Excellent Labor Supply

In addition to a very sizable underemployed workforce, there are many former residents who are well educated and wish to return to Wyoming should skilled jobs become available. A study performed by PFResrouces Inc. in late 2000 confirmed that there are 4,200 underemployed workers in our immediate commute region. Northwest College in Powell with 1,900 students also provides a sizable talent pool.

The State of Wyoming has a well-funded workforce development training program, providing valuable financial assistance in addressing critical training needs. Coupled with this financial assistance, companies can obtain high quality training through the Northwest Center for Technology and Innovation located on the West Campus of Northwest College. This state-of-the art technical training center offers customized courses and workshops tailored to your business.

Business Incubator Facilities

Three, high quality, technology incubator facilities are available in Powell for small, growth-oriented companies.

  • The Northwest Center for Technology and Innovation has just been completed and provides an excellent business environment, complete with furniture, phones, free high-speed internet access, copier, FAX, technical support, and free utilities ‚ all for $75 per month per workstation. In addition, this Center provides four telecommuter stations for per-hour use at $2.50/hour. Plans are being developed to link the Center to the resources and expertise of the University of Wyoming.
  • The 4,000 s/f Powell Business and Technology Incubator is a high quality facility currently leased to a high tech company, with Target Powell Valley acting as facility manager.
  • Our newest facility is the Allied Manufacturing Incubator, a high quality, industrial steel building containing 20,000 s/f of manufacturing floor and office space for start-up and growth oriented manufacturing companies.
     

Telecommunications

Area telecommunications are provided by QWEST, plus a very progressive and aggressive independent telecommunication company called TRI TEL Inc. Both QWEST and TRI TEL Inc. provide end-to-end fiber optic service for area businesses. TRI TEL is supported by a state-of-the art, Lucent 5E switch, with the TRI TEL point-of-presence tied into the Touch America fiber network.

Incentives

Grant funds are available for infrastructure development through the state Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. This program provides grant assistance in the development of necessary utilities, roads, etc. to bring a new business location on line. In addition, the CDBG program can also provide grant funding for technical assistance such as planning, business plan development, marketing plans, etc. Workforce training grants are available as mentioned above, with high quality training easily obtained from Northwest College or from another vendor of choice. Relocation incentives are also available, customized to each prospect. In addition, very attractive land options can be offered through Target Powell Valley, in the First Development Park, or Watertower West Park.

Technical Assistance for Businesses

Powell is the location of the SBA regional office of the Small Business Development Center Network. This office provides business plan development and business counseling services at no charge. Co-located with the SBDC office is the Northwest Regional Representative of the Wyoming Business Council as well as the regional engineer employed by Manufacturing Works. Manufacturing Works provides specialized technical assistance to manufacturers in order to improve their competitiveness.
