Education
in Powell has rated a top priority with patrons of the community since
the opening of the first public school in 1908. This emphasis on quality
education continues with both educators and parents working cooperatively
to keep educational standards high. Northwest College Northwest College is a two-year public, residential college with a reputation for excellence and facilities more like a small private college than a traditional community college. Founded in 1946, Northwest prepares students to transfer anywhere in the nation to complete their education, or through its occupational programs, to enter the work force in entry-level positions. Northwest awards associate degrees in arts, sciences and the applied sciences, plus skills certificates. Additionally, classes are offered on satellite campuses throughout the Big Horn Basin, as well as online. Campus Thirty-two buildings highlight Northwest's modern 95-acre campus, which is located in a residential section of North Powell. The physical facilities include instructional buildings, five residence halls, an apartment complex, a student center, an observatory, a beautiful library and the agricultural pavilion is one mile north of campus. The college also has a cozy mountain field station 50 miles west of campus near Dead Indian Hill featuring sleeping, dining and classroom facilities on 36 acres next to a national forest. Students Northwest serves
over 2,000 full-time and part-time students. While the majority comes
from Wyoming and Montana, students from throughout the country and the
world also study at NWC. Typically, more than 600 live on campus each
year. They are attracted to Northwest's competitive collegiate activities
in which students regularly achieve national rankings. Northwest fields
competitive teams in women's volleyball, men s and women'sbasketball and
rodeo, wrestling, forensics, livestock and equine judging, and livestock
showing. More
than 250 permanent employees work full and part time at NWC. Many faculties
hold doctorates and, collectively, they represent many of the nation's
best graduate schools. A locally elected board of trustees governs the
college. It is one of seven colleges coordinated by Wyoming Community
College Commission. Approximately
$9.0 million comes from three primary sources local revenue (Park County's
tax base), institutional revenues such as tuition, and the State of Wyoming.
Additional funds of $3.9 million to support the college come from other
sources. The Northwest College Foundation also raises over $600,000 per
year. Northwest is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. University of Wyoming School of Extended Studies and Pubic Services provides an ever increasing number of course offerings 'in the Powell area. Master degree programs are available in Public Administration and Business Administration. The University of Wyoming Outreach program offers bachelors degree programs' Social Science, Administration of Justice and Nursing. Lower division classes are offered at Northwest College and upper division courses are offered through UW on Northwest Campus and surrounding areas. Expansion of other degree programs is anticipated in the future |
