• Education

Education in Powell has rated a top priority with patrons of the community since the opening of the first public school in 1908. This emphasis on quality education continues with both educators and parents working cooperatively to keep educational standards high.

Powell is served by Northwest College, as well as Powell High School, Powell Middle School, three K-5 elementary schools, located in Powell proper, and a K-5 rural elementary school, located in the community of Clark.

The college and the public schools of Powell afford students a well-rounded, quality education. The per student expenditure and the low student/teacher ratio are both impressive. The General Fund expenditures for public school students total $9,426,854, or $5,106 per student. With a ratio of 14 students per teacher, each student is afforded the opportunity to receive considerable individual attention to help ensure their success.

The financial commitment of the community in offering an excellent pre-college education, communicates a strong message of educational support for the youth of Powell. This commitment to serve all the students of Powell is further demonstrated by the availability of a wide variety of course electives. Students at Powell High School may select from courses that prepare the student for college entry, or from courses such as photography, welding, building trades, and agriculture, designed to prepare the student to enter the world of work directly after graduation. All students in the Powell Public School system are also given an opportunity to excel in well-equipped, well-staffed, athletic, music, and co-curricular programs.

Northwest College

Northwest College is a two-year public, residential college with a reputation for excellence and facilities more like a small private college than a traditional community college. Founded in 1946, Northwest prepares students to transfer anywhere in the nation to complete their education, or through its occupational programs, to enter the work force in entry-level positions. Northwest awards associate degrees in arts, sciences and the applied sciences, plus skills certificates. Additionally, classes are offered on satellite campuses throughout the Big Horn Basin, as well as online.

Campus

Thirty-two buildings highlight Northwest's modern 95-acre campus, which is located in a residential section of North Powell. The physical facilities include instructional buildings, five residence halls, an apartment complex, a student center, an observatory, a beautiful library and the agricultural pavilion is one mile north of campus. The college also has a cozy mountain field station 50 miles west of campus near Dead Indian Hill featuring sleeping, dining and classroom facilities on 36 acres next to a national forest.

Students

Northwest serves over 2,000 full-time and part-time students. While the majority comes from Wyoming and Montana, students from throughout the country and the world also study at NWC.
