Transportation
Air
Powell
Airport is located nine miles north of town on Polecat Bench. The main
runway is 6,205 feet, paved, with lighting at night. In addition, there
are two cross runways (turf) each approximately 4900 feet long. The airport
has new runway lights, VASI lights, a rotating beacon, and a non-directional
beacon. A fixed base operator serves the airport during normal office
hours Monday through Friday and on call. Charter flights and flight instruction
are available. The Powell Airport has a published instrument approach
procedure. Tie downs and 100/ 130 octane and Jet-A fuel are available
for landing aircraft. A full-time mechanic is on duty. Yellowstone International
Airport, 25 miles to the west in Cody, is served daily by Continental
Express. A major international airport is located 90 miles north in Billings,
Montana.
Bus
Cody
Bus Lines serves Powell five days a week, connecting directly to Billings
and 1-90. Powder River Transportation also travels through the Big Horn
Basin connecting north to Billings and south to Casper, Cheyenne, and
1-80. The Powder River Transportation terminal is located close to Powell
in Deaver (15 miles away).
Car Rental
Local car dealerships have rental and lease cars available.
Motor Freight
Powell
is served by three regular route common carriers, each providing daily
service. Powell is headquarters for six irregular route common carriers.
Rail
Burlington
Northern Railroad provides daily service, allowing freight to move in
and out of Powell to any destination in the continental United States.
Major Highways
Transportation
is convenient in Powell with U.S. Highway 14A, 310 running through town.
The Highway connects to Interstate 90 which is approximately 80 miles
from town. Wyoming High-way 295 and 294 also connect Highway 14A for access
to the community.
Communications
Newspaper
The
Powell Tribune is a published Tuesdays and Thursdays in Powell. It was
established in 1909, the same year in which Powell was founded. Locally
owned, it has received national awards for excellence. The Tribune has
a total-market-coverage shopper called the Powell Tribune PLUS which is
mailed third class to all residents of the trade area. The Billings Gazette
and the Casper Star Tribune are available on a daily basis.
Radio
Two
stations call Powell home, one AM and the other FM. KPOW-AM was established
in 1941, broadcasts with 5000 watts of power at 1260 kilocycles, and is
full service with a country format. KLZY-FM was established in 1982, broadcasts
with 100,000 watts of power at 92.5 megahertz with an adult contemporary
format. Both AM and FM stations have network affiliations with ABC Radio.Powell
is also served by KEMC Radio of Billings, an NPR affiliate station.
Television
Powell
Cable TV is the local supplier of 30 stations, including HBO, Showtime
and The Disney Channel by subscription. It is a subsidiary of Telecommunications,
Inc., and operates under a franchise agreement with the City of Powell,
renewed in 1985 for 15 years. The cable company has one channel on the
system that can be accessed for local community service announcements
and program origination. A county translator makes four channels available
without cable hookup.
Other
Powell
has the usual telephone and postal services, including United Parcel Service,
Federal Express, a telephone answering service, two-way radio, telegraph,
and access to a statewide network of mobile and car radio-telephone service.
